OUR HAIR
It has always been said that the hair is
the crowning glory of a woman. If there is anything we, women, spend more money on, other than clothes and
accessories, it is our hair. The sad thing is , we spend more time taking care
of our hair extensions than we do our hair. We treat hair so wrong and still
expect it to grow normally and luxuriously. That is a farce. We have been
blessed with thick, curly and sometimes stubborn hair and to have it remain
beautiful, we need to take care of it properly.
The following points should help us maintain
healthy hair:
·
Use of Relaxers: I understand the need to always have
smooth, soft and straight hair and relaxers help us achieve that. But the use
of this chemical too often would lead to damaged, over-processed hair, causing
falling out and breakage. A 4 – 5 weeks interval between perms is
advisable. Understanding the texture of
your hair too, would help you know how often you use relaxers. There is usually no need for maximum/super
strength relaxers and you most certainly want to avoid lye relaxers. ‘Organics Olive Oil relaxer’ and ‘Profective
relaxers’ are examples of really good relaxers.
An error often made by women is the use of relaxers on part, usually
front, of the hair. Gives you desired effect at that time, but damages your
overall hair texture.
·
Hair should be washed often especially some days after using a relaxer. A leave-in
conditioner is best used. This prevents dryness, dandruff and itchy scalp.
·
Natural Oils and creams should be used often on our hair. We are
prone to dry scalps and hair and the use of these oils prevents this. Examples
are Shea butter, castor seed oil, Jojoba oil, avocado oil, olive oil among
others.
·
Split ends from over - processed hair should be cut
off. This reduces hair breakage. Letting them remain would cause the split ends to spread downwards and cause more
damage. It is preferably cut off when wet.
·
Curling irons, flat irons, hot dryers should not be used too often. Too much
use could also lead to breakage. Minimize the amount of brushing and direct
heat applied to the hair. You already put a relaxer in it, there is no need to
flat iron it every day. Sometimes our hair should be allowed to air dry.
·
Our extensions, plaits and even just our
hair should not always
be packed too tightly. It should be left free sometimes, to ease the drag on
our scalps.
·
Hair
like any other part of our body needs the occasional rest from the chemicals, heat and styling. It can just be combed,
packed in a bun or left free.
We
can all achieve healthy hair, all we need is an understanding of the kind of
hair we have, and a healthy hair care process. Any other suggestions would be
appreciated if shared.

Straight hair
What better way to wear hair other than straight? This look has always been there and is definitely not going anywhere. It enhances your facial features as well as your make-up. Both nude and smoky eyes work well with this look, it can also be worn for either a day or night time look. Straight hair can be rocked in different lengths, you can either keep it casually medium or long; both with either side bangs or full fringes.
Sleek and edgy; Short and cropped
Cropped hair has never looked this good, you can wear the cropped look either straightened or curly. It's all about how short and well trimmed the hair looks. The good thing about this look is that it accentuates your face and highlights any make up look you wear; use this look to the fullest.
Natural fro
Did this hair go away? I don't think so, I think women didn't really pay attention to it but it's back with a vengeance and we love it. To get this look, moisturize and air dry your natural hair and just let it out, or get an afro wig or weave, blend it with heavy eye or lip make up plus a hair fabric or ribbon accessory and voila, you're good to go.
Mohawk Marvel
What a marvel the Mohawk is! When the Mohawk came into the hair scene many of us flipped our eyelids (what is that) but with a little refinement, this look made a statement and became an instant hit. It works well with dark, edgy and smoldering make up.
Soft curls and waves
Always looks so sexy and with the influx of human hair extensions in different textures and lengths, our black sisters can rock this look, please do and explore your femininity. It goes with all make up.
Crown Braids
This look passes a message that with a little creativity, braids can look sexy. Do you want a little drama on your hair? Then rock this look this season and you won't regret it. You can use attachments, weaves or your hair, just pop a little braid in front where it can be seen and you're good to go. It has an African touch which makes it totally fabulous. Goes with dark and edgy make up too.
